ELDERS THE ROLE OF AN ELDER The elders at Union Christian Church take a leading role within our committees and ministries. They help set policy, vision and direction for our church. They are also responsible for the short and long term spiritual condition of the church. They are involved in recruiting and developing the staff, purity of teaching, congregational life, and carrying out the church’s mission statement. I will place shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or terrified, nor will any be missing." Jerimiah 23:4

DEACONS THE ROLE OF A DEACON The deacons serve in a supportive role to the elders. Not all committees will have an elder chairperson; some may require a deacon to serve as the committee chair. Many of the committees in which a deacon works are ministries which provide service to the membership and assist with the operational function of the church.
Servants, through whom you came to believe--as the Lord has assigned to each his task. 1 Corinthians 3:5b

A PROFILE FOR ELDERS AND DEACONS Throughout the centuries, God used leaders to accomplish His will and mission. when Moses was leading the people through the wilderness his father-in-law, Jethro, was concerned about his welfare and gave him this advice in Exodus 18:19-21: "Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their disputes to him. Teach them the decrees and laws, and show them the way to live and the duties they are to perform. But select capable men from all the people - men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain - and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens." (NIV) In Numbers 11:16 these men are referred to as "elders":. Both this title and form of ministry were adopted by the first-century church. The elders were responsible for leading, feeding, loving and protecting the church. In the New Testament Paul gives practical insight for church leaders in I Timothy 3:1-10 and Acts 20:28-31. The term "deacon" appears in Acts 6 as a servant-leader who was called to a specific task. The specific task these men supervised was the daily distribution of food. As we look for leaders at Union Christian Church we consider the Scriptures and understand that these men must be qualified. It is apparent that they must have both spiritual qualifications and personal character of the highest measure. They are to be the very best candidates the church has to offer. Each person whom you would recommend is not expected to be perfect. Yet, he is the kind of person you would desire to lead our ministries in the right direction through God’s help. Each person should be a tested individual involved in the ministry at Union Christian Church. Please consider the following information when choosing a candidate: What is their marital status or if divorced what were the circumstances? How long have they been a Christian? How long have they been a member at Union? After prayerful consideration please give your recommendations for elders and deacons and why you would like them to be a part of the leadership at Union Christian Church. Please make your responses on the attached sheet.
